How to play the Fmaj7 chord on guitar
Fmaj7 is the friendliest way into F: no barre, three fingers in a diagonal and the open 1st string.
The 3D hands holding Fmaj7. Switch to 0.5× and turn the guitar to see each finger.
Where the fingers go
- Ring finger (3) on the D (4th) string, fret 3.
- Middle finger (2) on the G (3rd) string, fret 2.
- Index finger (1) on the B (2nd) string, fret 1.
- Let high E (1st) ring open.
- Do not play low E (6th) and A (5th).
Notes in the chord: F – A – C – E
Tips
- Keep the index arched so the open 1st string rings; that open E is what makes it a major 7th.
- Use it where a song has F and the barre is not ready yet. In most strummed songs it fits.
- Strum from the 4th string.
Practise Fmaj7 inside a real song
Paste the chords of any song that uses Fmaj7, or snap a photo of the sheet. SnapFret plays it with the hands, and you can loop the change you find hardest.
