How to play the G chord on guitar
G spreads the hand from the 6th string to the 1st, so it feels wide for small hands.
The 3D hands holding G. Switch to 0.5× and turn the guitar to see each finger.
Where the fingers go
- Middle finger (2) on the low E (6th) string, fret 3.
- Index finger (1) on the A (5th) string, fret 2.
- Ring finger (3) on the high E (1st) string, fret 3.
- Let D (4th), G (3rd) and B (2nd) ring open.
Notes in the chord: G – B – D
Tips
- Use middle, index and ring (2-1-3) if you want to switch quickly to C later; ring, middle and pinky (3-2-4) frees the index finger for G-to-Cadd9 changes.
- Keep the thumb low behind the neck so the fingers can reach across the fretboard.
- Let the open 3rd, 4th and 2nd strings ring. Check them one by one.
