How to play the D7 chord on guitar
D7 turns the D triangle upside down: the index moves to the 2nd string and the ring finger to the 1st, which trips up hands that already know D.

Where the fingers go
- Middle finger (2) on the G (3rd) string, fret 2.
- Index finger (1) on the B (2nd) string, fret 1.
- Ring finger (3) on the high E (1st) string, fret 2.
- Let D (4th) ring open.
- Do not play low E (6th) and A (5th).
Notes in the chord: D – A – C – F#
Tips
- Picture the D triangle turned upside down: its odd note is still on the 2nd string, but now at the 1st fret instead of the 3rd.
- Strum from the open 4th string, as with D.
- D7 pulls strongly to G. G – D7 – G is one of the most common changes in folk and country.
Practise D7 inside a real song
Paste the chords of any song that uses D7, or snap a photo of the sheet. SnapFret plays it with the hands, and you can loop the change you find hardest.
