How to play the A7 chord on guitar
A7 is A with the 3rd string left open. One finger fewer, and the open G adds the bluesy tension that pulls a song towards D.

Where the fingers go
- Middle finger (2) on the D (4th) string, fret 2.
- Ring finger (3) on the B (2nd) string, fret 2.
- Let A (5th), G (3rd) and high E (1st) ring open.
- Do not play low E (6th).
Notes in the chord: A – E – G – C#
Tips
- Arch the middle and ring fingers so the open 3rd string between them rings clearly.
- In a song in D, A7 is usually the chord just before you land on D. In a blues in A, it is the home chord.
- Coming from A, you can also just lift the finger on the 3rd string and keep the other two where they are.
Practise A7 inside a real song
Paste the chords of any song that uses A7, or snap a photo of the sheet. SnapFret plays it with the hands, and you can loop the change you find hardest.
