How to play the B7 chord on guitar
B7 is the open chord that needs all four fingers, and it turns up in nearly every song in E or Em.
The 3D hands holding B7. Switch to 0.5× and turn the guitar to see each finger.
Where the fingers go
- Middle finger (2) on the A (5th) string, fret 2.
- Index finger (1) on the D (4th) string, fret 1.
- Ring finger (3) on the G (3rd) string, fret 2.
- Pinky finger (4) on the high E (1st) string, fret 2.
- Let B (2nd) ring open.
- Do not play low E (6th).
Notes in the chord: B – Eb – A – F#
Tips
- Place the middle (5th string) and index (4th string) first, then the ring and pinky on the 3rd and 1st strings at the 2nd fret.
- The 2nd string stays open between the ring finger and the pinky. Check that it rings.
- Practise Em – B7: the middle finger stays on the 5th string, 2nd fret, as a pivot.

Leave out the 5th string. Three fingers, the open 2nd string still gives the B, and in a strummed song it sounds clearly like B7.
Practise B7 inside a real song
Paste the chords of any song that uses B7, or snap a photo of the sheet. SnapFret plays it with the hands, and you can loop the change you find hardest.
