How to play the Dm chord on guitar

Dm sits on the top four strings like D, but the 1st string is pressed at the 1st fret, which pulls the index finger into a tight spot under the other two.

Where the fingers go

  1. Middle finger (2) on the G (3rd) string, fret 2.
  2. Ring finger (3) on the B (2nd) string, fret 3.
  3. Index finger (1) on the high E (1st) string, fret 1.
  4. Let D (4th) ring open.
  5. Do not play low E (6th) and A (5th).

Notes in the chord: D – A – F

Tips

  • Place the index on the 1st string first, then the middle on the 3rd and the ring on the 2nd.
  • Strum from the open 4th string; the 5th and 6th stay silent.
  • Compare it with D: only the 1st string changes, from the 2nd fret to the 1st. That one half step is what turns major into minor.

Practise Dm inside a real song

Paste the chords of any song that uses Dm, or snap a photo of the sheet. SnapFret plays it with the hands, and you can loop the change you find hardest.
