How to play the C7 chord on guitar
C7 is C with the pinky added on the 3rd string, 3rd fret. Four fingers at once, and for many players the first chord that really needs the pinky.

Where the fingers go
- Ring finger (3) on the A (5th) string, fret 3.
- Middle finger (2) on the D (4th) string, fret 2.
- Pinky finger (4) on the G (3rd) string, fret 3.
- Index finger (1) on the B (2nd) string, fret 1.
- Let high E (1st) ring open.
- Do not play low E (6th).
Notes in the chord: C – E – Bb
Tips
- Make the C shape first, then drop the pinky onto the 3rd string.
- Keep the pinky curved and close to the fret; a collapsed pinky mutes the open 1st string.
- C7 leads to F, so it shows up in songs in F and in a blues in C.
Practise C7 inside a real song
Paste the chords of any song that uses C7, or snap a photo of the sheet. SnapFret plays it with the hands, and you can loop the change you find hardest.
